REDEFINING WHAT IT MEANS

TO BE

A

WORKING MOM

…in a world without working dads.

Isn’t it amazing how many working dads there are?

Oh wait. The phrase “working dad” isn’t a thing, but there are working moms. There are men, who are dads, who work. Too frequently, fathers in the workplace who take time to put family first are praised, exalted, celebrated. This is rarely true for women, who are moms, who work. “Working mom” is a phrase often associated with unnecessary bias and can be an indicator of lesser pay. It is a phrase that implies the work comes before the mom-ing. Sure, there are seasons when work requires the bulk of your attention, but it is never the most important role. It is a label many of us wear as a badge of honor, but can stifle our career advancement, increase mom guilt and further the crippling narrative of the need to “do it all” (whatever that is). This is why Mom Who Works is critical work. It’s personal work, an internal examination of who you are, what you dream and how to bring it to bear; it is collective work, to prop each other up and together become moms who work; and it is broader work to shift the public perception that the mom who works is somehow not as qualified as the dad who works.
